Hubert de Givenchy founded his namesake fashion house in 1952, becoming one of the 20th century’s most renowned couturiers on the strength of his timeless and supremely refined designs. The innovative and modern luxury wear quickly gained reputation for Givenchy and in 1969, its first menswear collection was launched. Inspired by sports-influenced and streetwear silhouettes with contemporary cutting-edge prints, Givenchy was going for the top spot in luxury wear.
In 2017, after a successful stint at Chloé, Givenchy hired the infinitely talented Clare Waight Keller who took over the menswear and haute couture for the first time while continuing to design womenswear and accessories. In total, she designed 10 collections per year for Givenchy, bringing an ’80s-tinged glamour to her womenswear; a svelte, sometimes retro beauty to menswear; and an experimental exuberance to the house’s couture shows.
In June 2020, Givenchy appointed Matthew Williams from 1017 ALYX 9SM as a creative director. The self-taught designer has already cultivating strong relationships along the way with top talents across creative fields, including art, music photography, and fashion. His craftsmanship, attention to detail and his signature “rollercoaster” buckle quickly became iconic among tastemakers.
