A devotion for extensive research, continual experimentation, function and use have been at the forefront of the Italian menswear label Stone Island‘s design philosophy since its inception in 1982. Established Massimo Osti as a diffusion line of his main label — C.P. Company, Stone Island‘s story started almost by accident, with a study of special two-tone materials, so rigid and dense that they were washed extensively with pumice stones to tame their structure. The result was surprising — a garment that seemed worn-in and completely fascinating.
Stone Island is now helmed by creative director Carlo Rivetti — who took over the whole estate in 1993 — offering a range of highly-technical apparel, footwear and accessories that reference, and speak to a range of ’80s and ’90s sub-cultures. By using advanced technology and human capacity, Stone Island has become renowned for its visually striking and military-inspired designs, the use of rare and premium materials, the unique work on the finished garment via continuous experimentation with dyes and treatments, and its practical and functional products.
The Italian brand’s garments are instantly recognisable, thanks to their signature compass patch — positioned on the upper left arm sleeve — a symbol held on by two buttons that references love for the sea and an aim for constant research.
