Lacoste is a French company, founded in 1933 by tennis player René Lacoste (who is best-known for inventing the iconic cotton piqué L1212 polo shirt that enabled better movement for players on the court) and André Gillier. Its founder, received the nickname ‘The Crocodile’ — after betting the French Davis Cup coach a crocodile-skin bag — inspired the instantly-recognisable embroidered logo that helped cement the French casualwear brand as a status symbol of the 20th century. The brand sells clothing, footwear, sportswear, eyewear, leather goods, perfumes, towels and watches. The crocodile logo remains at the centre of the brand’s understated designs.
